What a PhD in Education Can Mean for Your Career

 

A PhD in education can prepare students for a career within the nation’s educational system. Whether a student plans to follow a career as a professor, working directly with students, or as a member of a school or school system’s administrative staff, handling policies, an education doctorate is an appropriate goal.

As is the case with most PhD programs, a program that offers a doctorate in education can take up to four years or longer to complete. The first few years will be spent addressing formal coursework, which may include courses on the following topics:

In addition, while a Doctor of Education degree, or Ed.D., may prepare students for administrative positions such as superintendent or principal, these positions are also obtainable with a PhD in education.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the 2010 median salary for postsecondary teachers was $62,050 per year, while many postsecondary education administrators made over $83,000 on an annual basis. Considering this, the time, effort and money spent pursuing a PhD in education should be more than worth it
